A few weeks ago, Sage's 6th Grade class had an assignment to bring a weird-looking vegetable to school and then write a story about it. For several days, we scoured the local supermarkets for misshapen vegetables without success. (Japanese supermarkets pride themselves on the uniformity of their vegetables, so any imperfect specimens had been weeded out long before reaching the shelves.)
Fortunately, one of Sage's classmates had some spare misshapen vegetables from a friendly gardener, so Sage used one of them for the basis of her story:
Once they were finished, they presented their stories to children from the school's Early Learning program (3-year-olds to 5-year-olds). Here is Sage reading her story, carrot in hand:
